The illness dancing mania begins in Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen), possibly due to ergotism. Shaikh Hasan Jalayir became the ruler of the Jalayirid Sultanate, in what is now Iraq, as the eldest son of the late Shaykh Uways Jalayir, who had been Sultan since 1356, but would reign for only one day. Hussain Jalayir was installed as the new ruler of the Jalayirid Sultanate after he and the other emirs arrested and executed Hussain's older brother, the Sultan Hasan, who had reigned for only one day.

- May 20 – Edward the Black Prince, eldest son and heir apparent to England's King Edward III, presides over a council of bishops and nobles at Westminster on Whitsunday to review a demand by Pope Gregory XI for a subsidy from England to help the Papal States in the war against the Republic of Florence. In his letter, the Pope asserts his right as Lord Spiritual and refers to himself as "Lord of all". The English nobles conclude, and the bishops agree, that the Kingdom of England will not be subject to the Pope's authority.source
